Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born in 1919. His father passed away six months before his birth, and briefly after Ferlinghetti was born, his mother was committed to an Insane Asylum. He did not get into writing until he was in College, when he lived with his college mates in Maine, Lobster fishing.
He never considered himself part of the beat movement, but more of a bohemian of an early generation. He was part of the beat movement because His bookstore "City Lights Books" was the beat headquarters when they were in San Francisco.
